Ubosot
(Ordination Hall)

The Ubosot, also known simply as the Bot, is the most sacred building in a Thai Buddhist temple (Wat). It is the place where important religious ceremonies are held, such as monk ordinations and the recitation of the Patimokkha (monastic code) by monks during the Buddhist observance days.
The Ubosot is typically a separate and specially consecrated structure. Its sacred boundary is marked by eight Sema stones (boundary stones), one at each of the eight cardinal points around the building, and sometimes a ninth in the center. These stones are used to demarcate the sacred area, known as the Sīmā, within which only monks may perform certain rituals.
Architecturally, the Ubosot is often richly decorated with intricate carvings, gilded ornaments, and murals that depict stories from the life of the Buddha. A large principal Buddha image is typically enshrined inside.
Unlike the Viharn (assembly hall), which is open to laypeople for worship, the Ubosot is primarily reserved for monastic functions and is considered the holiest area of the temple complex.
